THE Pentagon is pushing for its new policy on prisoner detention to omit a
key tenet of the Geneva convention that bans "humiliating and degrading
treatment", marking a potentially permanent move away from international human
rights standards.

Wait a second here, I thought we were all decent human beings? So, you're going to republish the Oxford - no, I meant the Harvard dictionary (I'm sure the British have more sense than the American Masters Of The World), and under the definition "human", you'd have something like:

  • characteristic of humanity; "human nature"
  • relating to a person; "the experiment was conducted on 6 monkeys and 2 human subjects"
  • homo: any living or extinct member of the family Hominidae characterized by superior intelligence, articulate speech, and erect carriage
  • having human form or attributes as opposed to those of animals or divine beings; "human beings"; "the human body"; "human kindness"; "human frailty"
  • note: excludes prisoners of war and people George Bush doesn't like

How strange it is that America can ignore the UN and wage war (with the said organisation twittering in the background in disapproval but not much else), and now flout human rights legislations without much opposition. The rest of the world with any political oomph is still too busy licking boot to do much more than go "huh, oh ok" and go back to eating shoe polish.

The rest of us normal people will go "Oh my God, that's terrible", and continue eating dinner - the same we've done with every other global tragedy.

Anyhow, go to http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/pentagon-set-to-drop-geneva-convention/2006/06/05/1149359675116.html to read more about it.
